THE SUN - Sunspots AR 1734, 1739

Sunspot AR 1734

was directly facing Earth when photographed, and has the right magnetic field to produce M-class flares.

Sunspots AR 1734, 1739

1739 erupted on May 3rd and produced an M5 flare that hurled plasma into space at 1300 km/s (watch movie here: ) . The CME will brush the Spitzer space telescope that is now 180 million km away from Earth and is looking at the sky in infrared (heat detector).
